Monogram Etiquette
Choosing the right monogram for a personalized gift does not have to be confusing. Here are a few tips to help make monogramming easy.
There are two different types of monograms. One is the traditional monogram which features three initials. The last name initial is larger and in the center with the first name initial to the left and the middle name initial to the right. For example, in a traditional monogram style, the initials for the name Amanda Heather Greene would appear as AGH. We offer traditional monograms in five different fonts; The Jackson Monogram, Oval Monogram, Avalon Monogram, Interlocking Monogram and Circle Monogram. Most often, Avalon Monogram and Interlocking Monogram is used for ladies and Circle Monogram is used for gentlemen, although we are happy to use any font you prefer.
In the non-traditional monogram, also referred to as a cipher, the initials appear in the correct order, all letters being the same height. For example, in a non-traditional monogram, the initials for the name Amanda Heather Greene would appear as AHG. Old English and Roman Block fonts are most often used for this style of monogram, although you are certainly not limited to these. We have used Upright Script, Parisian font and Century Block letters for non-traditional monograms.
But you don’t have to always stick to initials or monograms. Names and dates are popular choices as well. These look best in script and block fonts. Just remember, the more letters you have, the smaller the engraving will be.
Of course, we also offer Greek letters for the perfect gift for your sorority sisters and fraternity brothers.
We are pleased offer a number of decorative fonts not found anywhere else to make your personalized gift truly unique. To view our font selection, please click here. If you’re still not sure about which font to choose, please contact us. We are happy to help answer any questions you may have.
Some of our monogrammed jewelry can be engraved on the back side. When choosing to have an item personalized on the back, please keep in mind the size of the piece. A charm cannot hold the same amount of engraving as a larger pendant, just as a baby bracelet cannot hold the same amount of engraving as an adult bracelet. The more letters used, the smaller the engraving will be.
